Theyre a convenience for musicians (especially instrumentalists singers often hate them) and a pain for engraving programs. They have the 'wrong' duration and the 'wrong' alignment (placement). Choose Utilities > Update Layout to ensure that Finale is displaying the current layout of the score. Thats because whole-bar and multimeasure rests are themselves not consistent with music notation in general. If a whole rest was entered in a measure, that measure will not be included in a multimeasure rest until you erase the whole rest (using the Simple Entry tool, Speedy Entry tool, or Edit > Clear All Items). In order for measures to be grouped, they must contain default whole rests. Finale creates multimeasure rests in the selected region, using the same rules as when you use Special Part Extraction to create rests-breaking them at key and time signatures, or when you’ve selected Break a Multimeasure Rest in the Measure Attributes dialog box for the measure. Choose Edit > Multimeasure Rests > Create.Choose the Selection tool and select the region that contains the measures you want to display as a multi-measure rest (you can also select your whole score). If you’re not in Page View, choose View > Page View.If you would rather control which measures get combined into multimeasure rests, you can select the measures that you want to combine into a multimeasure rest in your score. When you create parts using Finale’s Linked Parts and Special Part Extraction commands, Finale groups all empty measures into multimeasure rests. If you need to change the settings for a single multimeasure rest, select the multimeasure rest and choose Edit > Multimeasure Rests > Edit. Finale uses these settings when you create multimeasure rests in the score. If you prefer that no number appears-as when using the new symbolic rest style, for example-enter the number of measures to be included in a multimeasure rest before Finale displays the number. Finale displays a number on all multimeasure rests in your score. If you want to use a shape to notate multimeasure rests, make sure that Start Numbering at _ Measures is set to two measures. If you want to use the existing multimeasure rest symbol but you don't want it centered on the middle staff line, edit the shape in the Shape Designer. Click Shape > Select to specify how you want the multimeasure rests to appear when you use Extract Parts (in the File menu), when you turn on Special Part Extraction (in the Document menu) for one or more staves, or when you choose Create (in the Measure menu’s Multimeasure Rests submenu). The Document Options - Multimeasure Rests appears. Choose Document > Document Options and select Multimeasure Rests.Tip: If you’re using layers, you can move all rests in one layer (or all) a specified distance up or down from their default center-line position (see Multiple voices for a more complete discussion). If you want to make sure you don’t inadvertently drag the rest horizontally, press SHIFT as you drag. When it’s where you want it, press zero (0) to exit the editing frame. Press SHIFT to prevent it from moving vertically. To move the rest horizontally, simply drag it.If not, press SHIFT+ ’ (apostrophe) to switch layers. MM Rests shouldn’t segfault when there’s no StaffSymbol. If you’ve created a separate voice in each layer, make sure you’re in the layer containing the rest. You can also use the arrow keys to position the insertion bar. ![]() If you have created two voices using the Voice 1/Voice 2 mechanism (the inner-voice mechanism used by the HyperScribe tool), you can move any rest in Voice 2 by dragging it up or down. Choose the Speedy Entry tool and click the measure in question.
